The Polar Express is a children's tale written in the form of a novella and published in English in 1985 by Chris Van Allsburg. It tells the story of an unnamed boy who goes on a magical trip to the North Pole aboard Charles F. Mertz's "Polar Express" locomotive, but falls asleep and misses his stop until he awakens many years later, back in his own bed. The plot includes many classic Christmas themes such as loneliness, giving, hospitality, hope and redemption The Polar Express is set during Christmas Eve night at about midnight. Throughout the story there are elves that prepare for Santa Claus delivering presents to children from the North Pole. The story begins with a young boy lying in bed on Christmas Eve, waiting for Santa Claus to arrive, feeling scared and sad because he doubts that Santa Claus will come. The boy's dog lies next to him, waiting also. Then suddenly the boy sees a steam locomotive from his window that stops outside his house. The conductor of the train calls out to him by name and invites him aboard the train which is decorated for Christmas. The conductor warns him that there may be a lot of snow at the North Pole, but reassures him that they will be back home by morning. There will be enough time to open presents and go out for a nice breakfast before going off to school. The boy happily accepts the invitation, and the conductor sets off. When he wakes up, he finds himself feeling better because he is with his friends and family, opening Christmas presents. In terms of plot structure, the story is told from a subjective point of view in first person tense. Although it can be seen as a self-contained story, there are references to other stories that may not be immediately obvious to a reader who does not know them. "The boy wonders what would have happened if the conductor had turned back after reading his letter or if his father hadn't been home to let him in. The boy wonders what may have happened if he had stayed in bed that morning" The book was made into an animated film of the same name by Warner Bros. Pictures. It was released on November 13, 2004, and has received generally positive reviews for its animation and storytelling. The film's soundtrack also contains traditional Christmas carols associated with the Holiday season, including "Deck the Halls", "O Little Town of Bethlehem", "Greensleeves" and "Silver Bells". Each song was originally composed or written for other occasions or locations other than Christmas. The main character is a boy who lives in New York City. He is visited by an elf on Christmas Eve, who gives him a package of reindeer droppings. The boy's dog, who has been ill for some time, sneaks out to get the package. The boy returns home after his mother blunders into the house early. Inside the package are flies that are supposed to be reindeer farts, but he doesn't understand what they are. He watches television until his parents come home and put him to bed. He sleeps until he sees a dream of Santa Claus in front of a train station. He quickly gets up and his parents let him out of the house without hearing him say "Thank you". cfa1e77820
